At Rotary Manningham City, we’re proud to serve our local community here in Victoria, Australia, and we want to debunk some common myths with real-life examples from our own backyard.

Here are 5 myths - and the real story!

5 Rotary Myths — Busted!

Rotary is one of the world’s oldest and most respected service organisations — yet many people are surprised to learn what we actually do. At Rotary Manningham City, we’re proud to serve our local community here in Victoria, Australia, and we want to debunk some common myths with real-life examples from our own backyard.

Myth 1: Rotary is Only a Social Club

Reality: Fellowship is part of Rotary — but community impact is at the core.
At Rotary Manningham City, members - men and women - regularly come together not just for fellowship, but to deliver meaningful initiatives such as:

  • Conducting an annual Charity Golf day, with funds going to support Prostate canver research

  • Supporting CareNet Reverse Advent Calendar Boxes, where we funded and distributed 500 food boxes to assist families facing food insecurity during the holiday season.

  • Hosting the inclusive Mayoral All Abilities Good Vibrations Disco, a fun, black-tie event for people of all abilities with over 100 participants, showcasing our commitment to inclusion and community spirit.

These aren’t social gatherings — these are real community service outcomes.

Myth 2: Rotary is Only for Retirees

Reality: All ages and backgrounds welcome!
Our projects involve people of different ages, from younger professionals to retirees — all committed to service. And we engage with young people in the community too:

  • We support leadership development through events like youth leadership training and speaking competitions in 11 local primary schools.

  • We’re involved in leadership skills building like the East Doncaster Secondary College DG29 Project, helping student leaders grow and learn.

That proves Rotary isn’t just for one stage of life — it’s a multigenerational movement.

Myth 3: Rotary Only Does Overseas Aid

Reality: Local impact matters most — and we do both.

While Rotary International works globally, Rotary Manningham City focuses strongly on local needs:

  • We support organisations like Doncare, including a generous $3,000 donation to their programs that assist vulnerable families and individuals.

  • We’ve previously backed local food relief and community support in coordinated efforts with other community groups.

We respond first to needs right here in Manningham — but our connection to global Rotary enriches and amplifies what we can do.

Myth 4: You Must Have Leadership Experience or Be a Business Owner

Reality: No specific title or background required — just a willingness to serve.

Rotary thrives on diversity. Our members (men and women) bring many different skills — from community volunteers to professionals — and all learn from each other. Many members have developed leadership skills through involvement in committees and programs like:

  • The innovative community services QR Code project, which will use QR codes across local spaces to connect people with vital support services.  This project began with members identifying a need, collaborating across clubs and seeking grant support — a great example of Rotary in action.

Myth 5: Rotary is Too Time-Consuming

Reality: You choose your level of involvement.

Rotary Manningham City offers a broad range of ways to contribute — from helping at one event to leading major projects. Whether volunteering for a single activity like the ANZAC Schools Service (a long-standing tradition since 1990) or joining ongoing programs, there’s room for every schedule and interest.

Rotary Isn’t What You Think — It’s Better!

At its heart, Rotary is about making a difference, both locally and globally. Through service, fellowship, and leadership, we not only change lives in our community — we change ours too.
