What a delight to welcome Jay De Graaff as our new member last night. Jay is a local Doncaster resident, married to Jennifer and a proud father of two boys, Joseph and Jacob. He works as a Project Manager with the Department of Defence, previously an Officer Cadet in the Amy Reserves and has a long history of volunteering and being actively involved in the Manningham community. It was great to hear an update from Lyn Moore on the “Days for Girls” project to provide sanitary care for your girls and women. Lyn told us that she got involved in the project 9 years ago after meeting Margaret Cunningham at a Rotary District Conference and was so enthused that she joined the team that Margaret ran. Margaret was the wife of the former Templestowe member James Cunningham, and she started the project in Victoria many years ago. Lyn shared a video with us on the project which featured Marina Prior as the spokesperson and strong supporter for the program. It showed us the way in which the kits are prepared, the education and distribution programs that are run in so many third world countries around the world and talked about the extremely positive impacts the program has on the lives of these young people. The importance of including young boys in the education programs was also stressed. The Rotary Clubs of Templestowe, Doncaster and Manningham, and now Manningham City have all financially supported the project.
Next week we have the District Primary Schools Speech Competition Final on 4 November at Doncaster Secondary College at 7pm. We will have a number of representatives from our local schools competing so please do you best to attend. On 7 November we have the Youth Music Festival ManningJam, and also the Mayoral Black Tie Disco. At out next meeting at the Manningham Club on 11 November, we have Chris Cahir from Bendigo Bank. A busy period coming up.
Just a reminder to those members who took so many food donation boxes from Carenet, to ensure they get them back to Carenet in Templestowe as soon as possible.
We also shared that after the cancellation of the Family Festival and Walk for Youth Mental Health on the weekend, due to the dire weather forecasts which did eventuate with full force on Sunday, we have reviewed possible dates for a rescheduled event in February or March 2027. Following discussions with Council we are aware of a number of other events already scheduled for this period, and also Easter is at the end of March. The possible dates that we have asked Council to consider are 28 February and 14 March. More to come!
